There is yet another opportunity for a new group activity (if there is enough interest). This time it is Mahjong.
Mahjong, is a game that originated in China, played by four players. The four player table version should not be confused with the popular Western single player (tile matching) computer game (Mahjong Solitaire), which is a recent invention and completely different from the table game.
Similar to the Western card game Rummy, Mahjong is a game of skill, strategy and calculation and involves a certain degree of chance. In Asia, Mahjong is also popularly played as a gambling game (although it may just as easily be played recreationally).
The game is played with a set of 144 tiles based on Chinese characters and symbols.
Each player begins by receiving thirteen tiles. In turn players draw and discard tiles until they complete a hand using the drawn tile to form groups and a pair and shouts out, Mahjong! to win. There will also be opportunities to shout out Chow!, Pung! and Kong! The four winds play an important part as well.
If you are already a player and find it difficult to find others to make up a foursome, or would like to learn to play, please let me know through the Web site’s “Contact Us” page, using the “Mahjong” heading (so as not to be confused with any other requests for interested parties).
